Life After MSS

Kristen is a former student of Midland Secondary School. She graduated in 2010 and she worked for a year to save enough money to attend Georgian College, Barrie campus, this year. Second only to Curling, woodworking has always been one of Kristen’s passions. She excelled for four years in the Construction Technology program at MSS.

Recently, Kristen came back to MSS to talk to the current class about her Cabinet Making Techniques course at Georgian. She said that “I was well prepared for the course because of what I learned at MSS”. Topics that the presentation covered included: what types of projects were completed in the course, drafting components, extended learning (spraying techniques) and time and money commitment.

The MSS Tech. Department is very proud of Kristen and wish her the best of luck in the future.

Click to view slideshow.Chris designed and built this dartboard case for a customer. He chose contrasting species of wood (Purple Heart, Maple and Oak) throughout the project, including the laminated handles. The design is very unique with the doors resembling the flights of a dart. Chris also installed dart holders to the inside of the doors. Although difficult to see, he also incorporated a chalk holder in the same feature. As one of the top students in the Construction Technology class, Chris has already completed the requirements of this course (3 weeks early) and is working on his third extra major project.

Back from Fishing

It has been 4 months since my last post “Gone Fishing”. Honestly, I was not fishing just busy updating the Blog “Grade 10″ and adding resources for students (i.e. pencasts in Grade 10_Unit 2_ Task 2).

An update on the fish hut, it is finished and is waiting for ice. I will ask Darrin to take some photos.

We have another great start to the year with Construction classes in Grade 10 (Mr. Haughton), 11 and 12 double credit (Mr. Balabuck). Photos to come.

Finally, I have upload some Pencasts to help you with Unit 2_ Technical Drawing. Pencasts are PDF’s that have audio embedded. I will walk you through all the tasks for this unit. A warning, I have a melodic and soothing voice that may make you drowsy.

Gone Fishin’

Darren worked with his uncle and others to design an updated look of the classic ice fishing hut.

The hut measures 6′ x 6″ x 7′ high. He used pressure treated 2″ x 4″ for the base and 2″ x 2″ wall studs to keep the weight down.

The second photo shows the interior of the hut without the seats. Unique to this design is the conventional hole in the centre with two smaller holes to increase the chances of landing the big one!

Darren is putting the finishing touches on at home to get it ready for December. This will include a:

metal roof
spring loaded door
3 floor hatches
2 small windows
two 2″ x 6″ skies
two bench seats

Book’m Dano

I mean Kyle. Not really sure what Hawaii 5-0 has to do with a book shelf, but it sounds cool. Kyle designed and constructed this book shelf from solid pine for the case and shelves. He used pine veneer sheet stock for the back.

In the second photo you will see the time and effort Kyle put in to drill in all the holes for adjustable shelves. He used a template and the drill press to ensure professional job.

Outhouse Mansion

Dylan took on this project to help out a community member with their effluent (defintion below) woes.

This is the third outhouse built in the Grade 11/12 Construction class in as many years. The design came from Mr. Woodley (King of the Outhouse: self-proclaimed). In the photograph you may notice that the studs are turned sideways to maximize space.

Other unique features are the inclusion of pressure treated floor joists, floor and lined seat to ensure many happy years use. The bench seat is made for 2″ solid pine and the customer provided a transparent toilet seat that pops with embeded sea shells (remeber the customer is always right ;0).

Unusual Suspects

Be on the lookout for these crafty woodworkers. They have been know to be crafty, knotty, warped, twisted and crooked!

Just kidding these three grade 10 students, Taylor, Ashley and Ronnie, went beyond the regular projects in class to create their own masterpieces.

Marauder or Muskoka Chair

Brady built his Muskoka chair from 5/4 Cedar decking material to give a sturdy feel to his project.

Being the last day of practical exams he is taking a well deserved break from school.

Who Let the Dogs Out!

Zach let the dogs out.

He used pressure treated 2″ x 4″ for the base, 2″x 2″ for the wall and roof and finally he clad the exterior with spruce plywood. With 20 year fibreglass shingles, this project should last the same.

Zach finished the exterior with an outdoor stain to protect the inside from the elements.

Justin Time

With the regular classes ending yesterday, Justin put the finishing touches on hs white pine table. Of course it is not white, he stained his coffee table with early american min-wax stain and clear coated it with 3 coats of water-based polyurethane (environmentally friendly).
